The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) in the Volta Region, with support from the Strengthening Investments in Gender-Responsive Climate Adaptation (SIGRA) initiative, has officially launched a Climate Risk and Vulnerability Assessment in selected communities within the North Tongu District.
The assessment forms part of efforts to integrate climate change considerations into development planning in line with the Environmental Protection Act, 2025 (Act 1124). It also advances SIGRA’s objective of enhancing the resilience of Ghanaians, particularly women, girls, and other vulnerable groups, through inclusive and gender-responsive climate adaptation investments.
An assessment team was inaugurated on Wednesday, 29 April 2026, to undertake a comprehensive study over the coming months using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. The exercise will assess existing and projected climate-related risks confronting vulnerable communities in the district. Findings from the assessment will inform the design and implementation of targeted, evidence-based climate adaptation plans at the district level.
The team in their opening remarks, extended special appreciation to the EPA Climate Change Department, most especially to Nana Dr. Antwi-Boasiako Amoah for the invaluable technical support in training the assessment team. They affirmed that capacity-building has significantly strengthened the team’s readiness to undertake the complex field exercise ahead and reiterated the need for continuous support from the department to achieve a successful exercise.
Speaking at the inauguration ceremony, the District Chief Executive for North Tongu, Hon. Victoria Amefadzi Yawa Doe commended the EPA and SIGRA for the initiative and described it as timely and critical to the district’s sustainable development efforts. She reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to providing the necessary support to ensure the successful completion of the assessment.
Field activities for the assessment are expected to commence in the coming weeks.
