NORTH TONGU HOSTS ENERGY MINISTRY TEAM FOR SOLAR HOME SYSTEMS PROGRAMME SENSITISATION AND SCOPING EXERCISE

On Thursday, 20th August 2026, the North Tongu District Assembly hosted officials from the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition as part of a sensitisation and scoping exercise for the Government’s Solar Home Systems Distribution Programme.

The engagement forms part of efforts to identify communities and households that are not connected to the national electricity grid and assess their eligibility for support under the programme. The initiative seeks to improve access to affordable and reliable electricity, particularly for underserved communities and households across the district.

Under the programme, eligible beneficiaries can access a subsidised Solar Home System at a cost of GH¢3,800. Each system provides essential household energy services, including a television, radio, mobile phone charging facility and five lighting bulbs.

The exercise also focuses on identifying unelectrified communities, households and small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), as well as CHPS compounds, nurses’ quarters and teachers’ quarters that may benefit from solar installations. In addition, free 3 kilowatt LED solar systems are being allocated for selected public facilities and street lighting to support community development and improve access to public lighting.

The North Tongu District Assembly is collaborating with Assembly Members, community leaders and other stakeholders to identify suitable locations, households and institutions for the programme. This collaborative approach is intended to ensure that the intervention reaches communities and beneficiaries with the greatest need for improved access to electricity.

The initiative represents an important step towards expanding access to clean and sustainable energy while supporting education, healthcare, household activities, small businesses and community safety in underserved areas.

The North Tongu District Assembly remains committed to working with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition and other relevant stakeholders to facilitate the successful implementation of the programme and ensure that eligible communities and beneficiaries across the district derive maximum benefit from the intervention.
