On Friday, 21st November 2025, the North Tongu District Assembly hosted a delegation from CIHEAM Bari—the International Centre for Advanced Mediterranean Agronomic Studies. The team was in the district to advance ongoing collaborations under the “Strengthening Agrifood Ecosystems in Ghana in Partnership with the Italian Private System (AREA Africa in Ghana)” initiative.
CIHEAM Bari, established in 1962, is a globally recognised institution specialising in advanced training, applied research, and development cooperation. With operations in over 40 countries, the organisation works closely with governments, academia, civil society, and private-sector partners to promote sustainable agricultural development.
The programme in North Tongu is part of Italy’s Mattei Plan for Africa, co-financed by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI). CIHEAM Bari leads the technical implementation, while the private-sector component is spearheaded by BFI.
Key Project Components Presented
During the meeting, the AREA Africa Programme Coordinator, Mr. Enrico Azzone, outlined three major components of the partnership:
1. Establishment of a 10,000-Hectare Model Farm
The flagship intervention involves a large-scale integrated farm to support the cultivation of rice, maize, vegetables and other staple crops. This project will be led by BF Ghana Limited, with the goal of boosting food production, modernising farming methods, and creating jobs for local residents.
2. Social and Community Infrastructure Support
A wide range of community projects is set to be implemented directly by CIHEAM Bari, including:
- A four-unit science laboratory complex for Chemistry, Physics, Biology, and Agriculture at Aveyime-Battor Senior High Technical School.
- Modern toilet facilities for male students and female staff.
- Twelve (12) blocks of toilet facilities and an ICT & Social Centre for the Aveyime community.
- A €10,000 annual scholarship fund for brilliant but needy tertiary students studying Agriculture and Science.
In 2026, additional works will be carried out by an Italian NGO, including:
- Rehabilitation of the Three Kings Special School and supply of 40 new bunk beds.
- Construction of 15 modern toilet units across basic schools in the district.
- Development of a 5-hectare educational farm for Modern Senior High School, featuring crops and small livestock.
3. Institutional Capacity Building
The programme will strengthen the capacity of institutions and beneficiaries, including farmers, start-ups, and small businesses. In October, the North Tongu District Agricultural Department benefited from a study visit to Italy as part of this component.
Commitment to Local Development
Speaking during the engagement, the District Chief Executive reaffirmed the Assembly’s commitment to ensuring that these partnerships directly improve livelihoods, enhance sanitation, and expand opportunities for residents. She also encouraged the project team to prioritize North Tongu citizens in employment opportunities that will emerge from the initiative.
