Juapong & Battor, North Tongu – 10th & 11th October 2025
The North Tongu District Assembly has successfully launched the National Sanitation Day initiative and organized a district-wide clean-up exercise to promote environmental cleanliness, public health, and community ownership of sanitation. The exercise formed part of the national agenda led by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana, to rekindle civic responsibility and communal participation in keeping Ghana clean.
The district launch, held on Friday, 10th October 2025 at the Juapong Market, brought together several dignitaries, including the District Chief Executive, Hon. Victoria Amefadzi Doe, the District Coordinating Director, Mr. Emmanuel Laryea Tetteh, the Presiding Member, the Regional Environmental Health Officer, the District Finance Officer, and the District Environmental Health Officer. Representatives from Zoomlion Ghana Limited, the Ghana National Fire Service (North Tongu Command), and staff of the District Assembly were also present.
In her keynote address, Hon. Victoria Amefadzi Doe commended President Mahama for reintroducing the Sanitation Day initiative, describing it as a timely effort that has reignited communal spirit and environmental consciousness across the country. She encouraged residents, traders, and students to adopt cleanliness as a daily habit, noting that “a clean environment is key to good health and sustainable development.”
A major highlight of the Juapong event was the enthusiastic participation of pupils from Juapong R/C Basic School, who joined Assembly staff, Zoomlion workers, and community members in sweeping, desilting gutters, and clearing refuse within the market and surrounding areas. Their participation served as an inspiring example of youth involvement in national development and environmental stewardship.
The following day, Saturday, 11th October 2025, the Battor Market and surrounding communities witnessed a massive clean-up exercise, with similar activities taking place across the district. Assembly Members in their respective electoral areas led the operations, ensuring widespread participation from residents.
At Battor, the clean-up was marked by strong community collaboration, with pupils from Battor D/A Basic School, market women, and youth groups joining the effort. The event was further graced by the Chiefs of the Battor Traditional Council and the Queen Mother of the Mepe Traditional Area, Mamaga Adzo Sreku IV, whose presence lent traditional support and encouragement to the initiative. Their messages emphasized unity, discipline, and consistency in maintaining a clean environment.
The clean-up exercises were supported by Zoomlion Ghana Limited and the North Tongu District Assembly, who provided logistics such as refuse trucks, wheelbarrows, and cleaning tools, while the Ghana National Fire Service offered technical assistance.
The collective participation of students, traditional leaders, Assembly officials, and residents made the exercise a remarkable success. Beyond promoting cleanliness, the events rekindled the communal spirit of cooperation, civic responsibility, and volunteerism among the people of North Tongu.
In conclusion, the successful launch of the Sanitation Day at Juapong and the subsequent district-wide clean-up exercises reaffirm the North Tongu District Assembly’s strong commitment to advancing the national sanitation agenda. The Assembly has pledged to sustain the momentum through continuous public education, monthly cleanup campaigns, and closer collaboration with traditional authorities, schools, and community-based organizations.
