On Thursday, 27th November 2025, the people of North Tongu gathered at the Alabonu D/A Basic School Park to celebrate the 41st National Farmers’ Day, held under the theme “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure the Future.”
The celebration brought together a distinguished gathering, including the representative of the Member of Parliament and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Presiding Member, Hon. Tse Kofi Azietor, traditional authorities, Assembly Members, farmer groups, Heads of Departments, staff of the District Assembly, the Department of Agriculture, government agencies, and residents across the district.
In the keynote address, tribute was paid to farmers and fisherfolk whose dedication sustains households and significantly drives the district’s economy. The speech also highlighted the numerous challenges confronting the agricultural sector climate change, limited financing, unstable markets, and inadequate post-harvest systems while applauding farmers for their resilience and willingness to embrace modern and innovative practices.
A major highlight of the event was the honoring of fifteen (15) outstanding farmers for their exceptional contributions to food production and rural development. Their achievements continue to inspire the district’s commitment to strengthening agricultural growth.
The address reaffirmed government’s dedication, under the leadership of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama, to boosting the agricultural sector through flagship initiatives including the Feed Ghana Programme, Tree Crop Diversification Project, climate-smart agriculture interventions, improved agro-input distribution, and expanded irrigation systems to enhance productivity and livelihoods.
The gathering was also informed about ongoing efforts to address the compensation concerns of victims of the Akosombo Dam spillage, with assurances of fair and timely redress from the government.
This year’s celebration reinforced the district’s collective appreciation for the critical role farmers and fisherfolk play in national development. With continued collaboration and sustained support, North Tongu remains committed to building a food-secure, economically vibrant, and resilient future for all.
